Yooooooooooooo Its blog time.
So a little about myself. My name is Kamal. There you got my bio about me lol. So first topic I want to talk about and Imma keep this one a more lighthearted topic… Them damn chicken sandwiches from Popeye's. I ain't ate it (YET) but what the f**k is in it. I'm thinking its Meth but I could be wrong. S**t boondocks most definitely called this lol. Also, let me put some knowledge in your head… They saved on 23 million in advertisement, let me say that s**t again they SAVED 23 MILLION ON ADVERTISEMENT alone. Now that just goes to show you how us black people can move a f**king market. Let that sink in while your homie that has a black owned business and their s**t is struggling and you eating the f**k out that sandwich and posting these stupid a** memes about the difference between Chick- Fil-A and Popeye's chicken sandwich making Whitey rich as hell. Also to let you know the old owner of Popeyes was Alvin C. Copeland, who passed away in 2008 and now is owned by Restaurant Brands International, which is most likely a committee of nothing but old white males. Look all I'm saying is that I ain't knocking you for eating that delicious meth sandwich lol (Idk if its good remember I haven’t tried it) but just know that black people got more power than we think on how we can move a Market and how we can support one another and make our s**t BOOMMMMMMMMMMM.

The Chef Luckett Way

My name is Senitra aka Goddess Chef Luckett, I am a personal chef/instructor. Cooking is aromatherapy to me and every day I dive deeper into it.  I've been cooking for 20 years and I am in love with my passion. I am gluten-free and vegan, meaning I do not eat meat, gluten, or dairy products. I did not grow up a vegan, but it's a choice I do not regret. So many make the change based on a trend, but it's been an amazing experience and a journey I have continued for the past 7 years. It has not been easy, but the reward is oh so worth it.  I am a Yogi, Animal lover, Reiki and Meditation instructor, Soul Therapist, Bruja Goddess, and lover of all things positive.
What does being vegan means to me? Well, to be honest for me it means giving me life. Back in 2011, I was 230lbs and very unhappy with myself for becoming so unhealthy. I could barely go up a flight of stairs without being tired, plus having to go to the doctor constantly was becoming a headache. I was being tested for thyroid disease, diabetes, heart problems and I was so damn depressed. When I looked in the mirror I didn’t recognize the person looking back at me. I had become a shell of who I was, hollow and empty. There was barely any joy in my life that I could feel, but no one ever knew because I kept a smile on my face. After facing the truth behind why I was so miserable, I had to take control of my health and stop just talking about changing for the better. I decided to try the 30-day vegan challenge after having a conversation with one of my coworkers at the time. I was so afraid that I would not be able to have a wide variety of food anymore since I wasn't eating meat, but I found a way to enhance my taste buds and satisfy my cravings. From the sole of my feet to the crown of my head I am unapologetically living my best life-giving back into the Universe, aligning myself while growing and walking in my truth.
My business was founded in New Orleans, Louisiana, but I'm currently residing in sunny San Diego, California. In the beginning, I created Vegetarian Oasis so that everyone (vegans and meat lovers) can eat together. I was tired of only having a salad to choose from and not being able to eat out in the same place as my wife. Not to mention, I also have Celiac disease. I can't just eat anywhere and anything I want, I needed a gluten-free kitchen and food with flavor. Since I could not find a restaurant to cater to my needs so I created a place.
The name Growth of a Goddess was born when I realized that I wanted my business to reflect me as a chef and my vision. What we eat contributes to our growth both physically and spiritually. After my 30th birthday in May 2019, I had an emotional breakdown on the day of my Father's 4 year passing anniversary and honestly, I didn't know why. I took the time to find myself, truly find myself because I was lost. I never thought growing up that my Father would not be here physically when I turned 30 and it hurt to my core. I had realized that I was lying to myself on why I still cooked meat for my customers. I was so afraid that if I cooked strictly vegan and vegetarian that my customer base would be gone, so I continued until my 30th birthday. I begged my Father when he was diagnosed with stage 4 Terminal Advanced Prostate Cancer to go plant-based, stop eating meat and white sugar because I wanted him to beat what was eating his life away inside. If I wouldn't feed the food I was cooking to my Father how could I serve that to my clients.
I cannot live my truth if I am worried about losing clients versus their health. I believe in my cooking and the love I put in each meal I create enriches your body and soul. I want to inspire others to unlearn what society has told us for so long, "We need to eat meat, we need to drink cow's milk to live a long and healthy life." Your life is precious and what you put into it is just as important as your environment. Everything contributes to your growth, (spiritually, physically, emotionally, and mentally) so why not put the best into yourself. If I cook for you I will only feed you for that meal, but if I teach and give you the tools to thrive, you will be fed for life.

I am Food Protection Manager ServSafe certified and Allergen ServSafe Certified. I specialize in meal prep, private parties, cooking classes, vegan, gluten-free, CBD/THC infused meals and desserts, and Liquor infused desserts.

The "Trendy" Vegan

7/31/2019

Peace! My name is Imani, and I’ve been on my vegan journey for quite some time now. Although veganism is “trendy”, the difficulties and perspectives of each individual is not. I am here to bring that content to you today.
Picture
I find it a bit alarming when people sigh at me after I first tell them that I’ve changed my diet. To be perfectly honest, I didn’t expect anyone to care..Nonetheless, I’m usually given a nice little eye roll, followed by comments and questions  along these lines:
“You’re one of those. You think you know it all because you’ve watched some documentary.”
“It’s trendy. Everybody’s doing it and now so are you.”
“You’re just going through a phase.”
“Where do you get your protein from without meat!?”
“Give up bacon???”
“I couldn’t do it. I can’t survive a DAY without meat.”
“Why care about food? You could get hit by a bus tomorrow. Life is too short.”
All of these opinions and questions that I receive are relatable because once I put all of this into perspective, I realize I used to feed myself that same exact lie —“I can’t give up meat.” Chicken and seafood was my biggest struggle. (I’ve relapsed a time or two. I’ll admit, I’m not perfect!). In conclusion, let’s just say I was eating those lies until I was starved by the truth. And that’s when I decided I needed change.
The first step to changing anything in your life is to change your mind. We typically decide the choices we make, based off our reasons. Once you have that solid reason(s), it becomes easier than ever!
Whether you go vegan to lose weight, fight  animal cruelty, make environmental improvements, rid health issues, or you simply want to feel better throughout this walk of life, MAKE THAT DECISION! Commit to it. Continue to remind yourself on why you made that choice, and commit to YOURSELF.
Picture
The research alone made it easier for me, knowing the side effects of eating meat.. I had to DECIDE that I didn’t want to physically put these toxins into my vessel (aka, my body). If we want to get specific, as a black people, we already have years of generational health issues that we do not need to continue and pass on to our kids, such as: diabetes, high blood pressure, heart failure, high cholesterol, inflammation, weight gain, & cancer…..just to name the major few.
“Why does it matter? You gonna die anyway.” —One of those phrases to tell yourself that it’s ok in the meantime, but in all honesty, I enjoy the way I’m living while I’m alive! I know that I know I want to take optimal care of my vessel while I’m in it. For example, what happens to your car when you never change your oil, the tires, or any of your scheduled maintenance on it? I’m sure it will be good if you let it go a mile past the typical mileage for that particular maintenance, but the point is, it will become VERY apparent of how much you took care of your vehicle in the long run. I know a few people who wouldn’t put 87 gas into a Porsche, but will ingest food and toxins that will instantly harm their body. So why would we take care of our cars more than we do for our very own vessels?  Our mind and bodies should come first when it comes to maintenance. You are absolutely free to do what you please with your body. I’m just here to help bring awareness to it all.
Picture
I’d be lying if I told you it was easy. When you have been raised in an environment for so long that has taught you so many lies about health, it’s honestly one of the most disturbing reality checks in a lifetime.  Because now you have these trust issues, and unanswered questions that you feel the need to resolve. As you continue to learn and grow, you’ll be able to find that research magnifying these issues that no one has warned you about.
Just continue to peel off the lies until you discover the truth that’s been hidden from us for all these years.
Let’s not be mistaken; It’s not that whoever raised you, did a bad job in raising you. I have no doubt that they did the best that they could, with the resources they were limited to. You have to understand that the knowledge of the generation(s) before us was not at the tip of their fingers like it is for us today.
If we are talking about the melanin people in the generation who grew up somewhere between 1940’s-1980’s, they had many other issues to battle already, such as survival, racism, segregation/integration, war on drugs, and many more to name the least. With those types of battles to gamble with, I imagine health was the last thing they needed to worry about. So it’s past due for us to turn this ”trend” into a genuine trendy lifestyle for our people.
Let me just say this… I don’t care how “faddish” it is to become a vegan today. I don’t care how much of a “trend” it is or how many other people are doing it today. I don’t care which documentaries you’ve watched, or what needed to happen to put a greater message out to the people, solely for the people to finally understand and awaken to what’s going on.
I’m just glad that we ARE waking up!! I’m just glad that we ARE watching documentaries! I’m glad that we ARE following amazing trends of educated leaders around us.
I’ll tell you this- As long as it is contributing to improving the health of my people in any way, I am perfectly happy with that. Please, let it be a trend. I’m just glad it’s a trend at all.
Let’s look at the bigger picture folks. Stop downing others because you see people making better or healthier decisions with their life, and you’re not. You don’t have to live their lifestyle in order to support or lift them up. You don’t. In fact, I think it’s a beautiful thing to support those who are following their dreams and listening to their heart. No matter what it is, if they are living in their true reality, (especially if it’s health improvement)..the very least you can do for your brothers, sisters, and earthlings around the world, is to uplift and support like no other, because….we’re all we’ve got.
Lets be healthy together!

The Southeast Art Collective

As a native of San Diego, I’ve always heard people (mostly non-natives) complain about the city. How it’s wack or there’s nothing to do, or my personal favorite, is there (insert group) out here? However, contrary to popular belief everything that another city has this city has. It may or may not be on the same scale but, it is here.

Art is my thing, I’ve been in the San Diego art scene for a little over 5 years, from poetry, to music (no I don’t sing or rap) and painting, I’ve seen and heard It all. To a non-native you wouldn’t be able to find us unless you knew someone in or around the scene. With the help of social media is has been more people to come out to the black art events but in my opinion it’s not enough to turn heads. Over the past 5 years I have watched the Art scene in Southeast come together, it’s been slow but steady on the rise.

As the Assistant Art Director of the Southeast Art Collective, our goal is to have the Southeast filled with art. Like Barrio Logan once you enter into that neighborhood you know where you are, you know the location by all the beautiful art that are painted on walls and utility boxes. That is one of the goals of the group. Another goal is to open up an art gallery/space in the community. Although we have other locations in which we use to host events and showcase our work. We would like something to call our own.

Just recently (Saturday, May 18th) the Malcom X library held their 4thannual Malcom X celebration, in this celebration there was a program of poets, various vendors, a guy came and spoke about the black history of San Diego, and other speakers all in which they spoke about the black community. And there was even a portion called the Legacy in Black Food Festival that featured southern cuisine and food from the African Diaspora that was there. You paid $10 and got to sample 6 different all black eateries. On that beautiful Saturday I saw some people that I knew and some I didn’t however, it wasn’t enough. I know that event could’ve been better than it was. Now grant it, it has come a long way seeing as if I have participated as a live artist in this event for the past 3 years. But something was still missing, more people. The complainers that Black art is not in San Diego, or that there is nothing to do. Where were you? How can we get to you? Do newsletters work anymore? I know that social media can help but I am one to admit that I will like something, click interested or going and even take a screenshot for a reminder and still forget or not even attend an event. I’m not perfect but I don’t complain that this or that isn’t there.

After this event my art team the Southeast Art Collective will get together to discuss it, the likes the dislikes, what we can do to make it better etc. If you have any suggestions or constructive criticism, please by all means let us know. Our goal is to get people out there and to enjoy and buy black art, to recycle the black dollar, with no complaints.

The next events that we have on our schedule are:

June 1st – Bell Middle School at 10am
June 29th - Final Summer Art Show 1pm-4pm at The Community Spot in Oceanview
July 6th – 4 Corners of Life Celebration

There are more events

Ways to get involved in the Southeast Art Collective follow us on Instagram as a whole or individually. Share our work, we are nothing without the voices of the people. Become a sponsor for the art gallery, we are currently looking for sponsors or if you know someone who would be interested in helping, forward their information to us.

For more information on how to get involved and events with The Southeast Art Collective email: SESDCOLLECTIVE@GMAIL.COM

I had been wine tasting a whopping one time before I visited Boutique Vino in San Diego’s, Downtown, East Village.  I was headed to meet a friend and catch up on what had been going on.  I was super excited to be meeting her at a Black owned wine boutique as I would not have many experiences to compare this one to. Upon my arrival, there on the patio sat one Black man chatting on his cell phone.  As I entered the boutique that man followed and greeted me.  I said “Hello,” and asked if he was the owner. His response, “Yes” with an outstretched hand.  I explained that I was there to meet a friend, Jasmine, and that my name was Tinicia. His face lit up, “Jasmine, she hasn’t been here in a while.”  The owner of this wine boutique knew exactly who I came to meet and was welcoming and excepting.  Go figure.
He asked what I would like to sip on, as I explained that I was used to drinking Moscato and liked sweet wines.  Justice, the owner, began to school me on the different types of wine and started me off with…well I can’t remember the name of the wine but, there was a giant T logo which of course meant that it was my destiny.
Three glasses of wine, a cheese, meat, and olive platter later, myself and Jasmine were wrapping up our convo., preparing to leave.   At the same time an older white man walks in to the boutique.  He explained to the Black, welcoming, excepting owner that he was on a fixed income and could not afford anything on the list.  He asked to look around, picked up a few knick knacks such as books and records, and when he finished, headed towards the door.  As he exited, he turned to Justice and stated, I’ll come back when I’ve saved a little money and can buy something.  But you’re not the owner, You probably just work here.”

The Music Box Concerts

K. Michelle came through at the Music Box (1337 India Street, San Diego, CA 92101) and blessed us with a superior performance.
There is something so personal about an artist who SPEAKS to an audience.  That’s that genuine LIVE experience.  The type of experience that makes you feel like you know the performer on a level that’s deeper than the song.
Some were sitting, most were standing, lots were swangin’, and everyone was engaged.
She took a sip of what I can only guess to be her new signature drink, Jack Daniels, before stating matter-of-factly, “I said Love‘em all, not Fuck ‘em all.”
“I always try to go, it doesn’t matter where it is, that there’s a love for some music and some R&B and some song writing.”

We personally had the opportunity to eat at Da Chicken and speak with Mr. Cooper “No Frills, no Thrills, just great food at great prices!” Coops offers indoor dinning and Da chicken coop offers patio dining. Great service and food is amazing. I mean where else can you get tamale fries.
